This helps. Wish I'd thought of this years ago when I was doing more of them. Some of you might like this idea and find it helpful.

The most annoying thing about setting up 12 strings is the big tangle of strings when you have to take them on and off for the various reasons which happens at least a few times during the process.

Capoing at the first fret helps keep them in the nut, but this is kinda like a big capo right at the bridge...

Next iteration will have slots filed in the middle bit instead of the whole thing sanded off.

It's mostly 12 strings that irrigate me. Wish I had thought if this when I had rack after rack of them to do sometimes...

Good idea Ed. I used to get irritated or irrigated :) by 12's too so we raised our prices for 12's and now I don't mind so much...:)

PS: You can use your fingers like a comb to sort out the string too but your innovation is cooler. The capo thing is standard fare for even 6 strings to keep things tidy at the peg head side. I always capo at the third so I can play Aqualung when she's tuned to pitch. :)

I use 3/4 inch Velcro or should I say hook and loop? Stretched across top and bottom of strings. Your idea looks like it might work better for 12 strings, though.

I had to work on a 12 string Rickebacker yesterday. There's no help or consolation for an experience like that. ;)

I worked on a 12 today putting a pickup in it so I had to pull all the pins but wanted to keep the strings on the headstock. I just simply wound each course (pair of strings) - when I was ready to put them back on it was very easy to unwind each pair.

I also keep the capo at the third, but I play Thick as a Brick... man, it takes me forever to set up a guitar

Nice!
The guy I first worked for showed me the Velcro thing. I upgraded by sticking each side to a piece of really thick leather.
It' not pink though. idunno
